Where is Tofino? The community of Tofino (population approximately 2,000) is situated at the tip of the Esowista Peninsula in Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island’s west coast. Just 40km south of Tofino is the community of Ucluelet, on the edge of the wild Pacific Ocean, with its rugged shoreline, a west coast working harbour and small town charm.

What is the weather like? Tofino is a temperate rainforest, receiving significant rainfall year round. As Tofino is located along the coast, the temperature is moderated by the sea. The weather is unpredictable and ever-changing, from sun to rain to wind to fog, yet this all lends to the uniqueness of the wild west coast. Summer is typically warm and relatively dry. August tends to see more fog rolling in off the ocean, due to warmer air temperatures this time of year. The winter can be especially wet, although the rainfall supports the eco-diversity and beauty of the area. The winter storms that brew on the coast are a reminder of how powerful the ocean truly is and storm watching has become a popular winter activity, creating a dramatic backdrop for a winter wedding.

What if it rains on my wedding day? Tofino’s weather can be unpredictable at the best of times! The wild west coast wouldn’t live up to its name any other way. If you are set on an outdoor wedding, it is advisable to choose a location that has both indoor and outdoor facilities or to consider tent rentals. There are always umbrellas and gumboots may be necessary, if the rain starts to really come down. Plus, photographers generally say an overcast day provides the best shooting conditions! If needed, the forest canopy offers a good rain cover and of course there are always inside options next to a warm fire or the distinctly west coast interior accents of your chosen resort setting.

Can we have our wedding on the beach? Yes and most people come to Tofino just for the beach! It is rare to have a ceremony within the Pacific Rim National Park, although these beaches are ideal for a photography session. You will need to contact the Reserve for information and permits regarding beaches within the park. Most beach wedding ceremonies are held on one of the public beaches within Tofino, which do not require a special use permit. You are however not permitted to use tents, structures, alcohol or exclusive use on any of the beaches within Tofino, as they are public property.
